Across the world, stroke survivor involvement in shaping care and research remains inconsistent—often limited to being consulted rather than genuinely involved in decision-making. SHINE was created to change this.

Featuring insights from Stacie Broek, Melinda Roaldsen, Stacy Quinn and Erica Murphy, the video highlights how SHINE is built on three core pillars: survivor-led governance, global inclusivity, and action-oriented advocacy. These foundations ensure lived experience doesn’t just inform decisions but actively drives strategy, design and delivery in post-stroke care and research.

In practice, SHINE is connecting survivor advocates across regions—from Europe to South America—to share strategies, influence policy, and promote person-led care frameworks. Early engagement across North America, Europe and Australia shows strong momentum for this approach.

The initiative has also established an international advisory board featuring globally respected leaders in stroke science and care: Bo Norrving, Sheila Martins, Urs Fischer, Else Sandset, Francesca Pezzella and Simona Sacco. This board supports SHINE’s survivor-led governance structure, ensuring lived experience guides every strategic step.

As highlighted in the video, SHINE represents a new model of leadership in healthcare—one where those most affected by stroke help design the systems built to support them. With growing global interest and an expanding network of survivor advocates, SHINE is creating meaningful and lasting change.
