In this video, Olivier Caronello, Principal Consultant at Philips, shares insights from an 18-month Stroke Redesign Care Pathway project delivered in partnership with Royal London Hospital.

Driven by the hospital’s ambition to become a leading stroke treatment, training, and research centre in the UK and Europe, the project focused on one critical goal: reducing time to treatment — a factor proven to significantly improve clinical outcomes and patient experience, while also supporting staff satisfaction.

The project brought together a multidisciplinary team of 20 key stakeholders spanning the entire stroke care pathway, from patient arrival through to discharge. Through on-site observations, in-depth staff interviews, and a structured three-phase programme of workshops, the team mapped the existing pathway, identified challenges, and co-created a future vision for stroke care.

As a result, 18 improvement themes were identified and prioritised based on impact and feasibility, with eight short-term opportunities forming the foundation of actionable change. These outcomes have since been embedded into a wider, hospital-led quality improvement initiative at a corporate level.

Reflecting on the project, Olivier highlights the power of breaking down silos, fostering multidisciplinary collaboration, and creating the space for teams to step back from daily operations and collectively reimagine care delivery — a particularly vital approach in stroke care, where time is of the essence.

Many thanks to Philips for supporting this video.
