This World Stroke Day, we look beyond the technology to recognise the people, personal stories and unwavering dedication driving innovation in stroke care.

Behind every medical device is a team of people driven by a shared ambition: to make a meaningful difference in patients’ lives. But sometimes, that motivation comes from an experience far closer to home.

To mark World Stroke Day on 29th October, Oruen is proud to present this compelling film, taking viewers behind the scenes at Wallaby Phenox to explore the personal stories, scientific expertise and commitment that drive innovation in neurovascular care.

Featuring Volker Trösken, mechanical engineer with more than 30 years of experience in the neurovascular field; Gary Brogan, Global Lead for Quality, Regulatory and Clinical Affairs; and Christoph Welp, Chief Operating Officer, the film offers a rare and personal insight into the people behind the technology.

For Volker Trösken, the mission is particularly poignant. Having lost his mother to a stroke while she was in a country without access to appropriate treatment, his work carries a deeply personal significance. His story is a powerful reminder that behind every advancement in stroke treatment are patients, families and lives that could be changed.

The discussion explores the evolution of mechanical thrombectomy technology, the challenges of designing and manufacturing highly sophisticated medical devices, and the importance of maintaining uncompromising quality standards.

The team also reflects on the role of clinical evidence, the value of close collaboration with physicians and the extraordinary pressure involved in bringing new technologies from concept to clinical practice.

One particularly moving moment comes as Christoph Welp recalls the first clinical use of a newly developed catheter. Arriving at the hospital, he encountered a young patient around the same age as his own son. The experience brought home the very real human impact of the team’s work, making the successful treatment an unforgettable milestone.

Throughout the film, one message remains clear: the true measure of innovation is not simply technical success, but the difference it can make to a patient’s life.

Restoring blood flow is a critical objective in mechanical thrombectomy, but the ultimate ambition extends far beyond the procedure itself. It is about helping patients achieve better functional outcomes, reducing disability and giving them the greatest possible opportunity to regain their independence.

World Stroke Day serves as an important reminder of the devastating impact stroke can have on individuals and families, but also of the remarkable progress being made through research, technological innovation and clinical collaboration.

This film is a celebration of the individuals, partnerships and shared commitment that continue to advance neurovascular treatment.
